Good nutrition, exercise, sleep, sun protection and a good skincare routine can help you maintain your youthful appearance and well-being at all stages of your life. Your skin is the most visible indicator of your general health and the condition of your skin is often the first signal of illness nor nutrition problems. Sallow, dull or blotchy skin often reflects a disease or nutritional deficiency. A vibrant glowing complexion reflects a state of good general health. Your skin needs protection both inside and out. Inner and outer nutrition are really two sides of the same coin. It makes sense to nourish the body within to obtain the correct balance of nutrients, because a healthy body is reflected in healthy skin. A correct balance of vitamins and minerals is essential for a wonderful, vibrant, healthy glow to your skin. Eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and using a high quality multivitamin supplement can do wonders for your appearance. Your skin also needs specific nourishing. Skin also needs protection from damaging environmental conditions like exposure to sun, wind and pollution. This is why a regular skin care regime is so essential at any age. Our skin is the barrier that shields us from: · Physical impact such as pressure and knocks · Thermal influences from heat and cold · Environment effects, such as chemicals, the sun's UV radiation and bacteria. The skin contains secretions that can kill bacteria and the pigment melanin which provides a chemical defence against ultraviolet light. To maintain healthy, glowing skin ensure: · Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day to hydrate and cleanse your skin · Wear sunscreen on all exposed areas throughout all seasons · Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables · Top up with a good quality vitamin and mineral supplement · Be vigilant with a morning and evening cleansing, toning and moisturizing routine Kim Beardsmore M.B.A. (H.R.M.), B.Sc. What does this mean? Simply by making sure your plate reflects a range of colours, you'll naturally create more balanced and healthful menus. Not everyone has the rime or the patience to count calories, but assessing the colours on your plate is something anyone can do - and it only takes an instant! Why Colour Is Important Many fatty and caloric foods, such as dairy products and startchy carbs, are beige or brown. When there are too many of these drab colours on your plate, weight gain is almost certain. That's because these beige foods often are high in calories and can leave you feeling hungry later. A cup of beige or brown beans can be over 200 calories....but a cup of red or green vegetables is under a hundred! Add fresh greens, deep purple-reds and bright yellow-orange to a meal, and water the nutrient content go up, while calories go down! Plus, you'll get more enjoyment from eating when there's a variety of colours and flavours on your plate. Although these ideas may sound whimsical, they're grounded in scientific fact. Dr David Heber, renowned nutritional expert from UCLA's Centre for Human Nutrition established the role of colour in his book, "What Color is Your Diet?" So, next time you visit the refrigerator, think colourfully. And remember to mix, not match! Kim Beardsmore M.B.A. (H.R.M.), B.Sc. Kids need physical activity. We all know that, but if you are a parent have you stopped to consider how much physical activity your child has had today? It's clear that children in the US and other developed countries such as Australia and the UK are getting more and more overweight and our children are moving less each day. Kids need a total of about 60 minutes of physical activity a day, but this does not have to be all at one time. Short ten or even 5 minute bouts of activity through the day are just as good. If you children are not used to being activity, encourage them to start with what they can do and build up to 60 minutes a day. Here are some ways to help encourage your child to be active and get moving every day. 1. Set a good example. If your children see that you are physically active and have fun, they are more likely to be active and stay active throughout their lives. Take the dog for a regular walk, get on a bike, play cricket in the backyard. 2. Encourage your child to join a sports team or class, such as soccer, dance, basketball, or gymnastics at school or at your local community or recreation center. 3. Be sensitive to your child's needs. If your child feels uncomfortable participating in activities like sports, help him or her find physical activities that are fun and not embarrassing. 4. Be active together as a family. Assign active chores such as making the beds, washing the car, or vacuuming. Plan active outings such as a trip to the zoo, picnics or a walk through a local park. 5. Because his or her body is not ready yet, do not encourage your pre-adolescent child to participate in adult-style physical activity such as long jogs, using an exercise bike or treadmill, or lifting heavy weights. FUN physical activities are best for kids. Kim Beardsmore M.B.A. (H.R.M.), B.Sc. If so, you may be familiar with the technique of writing to remember. Well, it may come as a surprise but writing down your intentions to lose weight can reinforce your decision and actually make it easier to stick to your programme. There is something powerful about New Year's Resolutions that are written down! Write this down: I will lose 1 kilo this week. Whether you post this note within easy view or scribble it on a scrap of paper and toss it, chances are you'll be a pound lighter by week's end, says Henriette Anne Klauser, PhD, author of Write It Down, Make It Happen (Simon & Schuster, 2001). Writing switches on the part of your brain (called the reticular activating system, or RAS) that keeps important messages in mind, ready for you to act on them when prompted. Just as it was when you studied for your school exams, writing things down reinforces your retention and helps shapes your behaviours. If you're aware, even subconsciously, of a weight loss intention, you're more likely to pass up the left over Christmas pudding, and walk the dog instead, for example. Whether you like to journal and keep your notes beside your bed or post something on your refrigerator, it doesn't matter. What is important is the act of writing. What should you write to help you lose weight? Your reasons to lose weight ("to gain energy and self-confidence"), which are good motivators and doable even if you don't trim down. Your concerns ("Will exercise take time away from my family?"), which force you to confront and resolve them before they sabotage your efforts. Your goals How much weight you want to lose and by when. Be realistic and realise that steady, consistent weight loss of 1/2 to 1 kilo per week is a healthy rate of weight loss.
